Barcarolles

Barcarolles are compositions inspired by the rhythm and character of the songs traditionally sung by Venetian gondoliers. The barcarolle is distinguished by its swaying, lilting, quality, intended to evoke the gentle rocking movement of a boat. The barcarolle peaked during the Romantic era, although traces of the form can be found as early as the 18th century.
